After Katrina, the November 2005 Louisiana Recovery and Rebuilding Conference set the stage for New Orleans' recovery. The conference was presented by the American Institute of Architects, in collaboration with the American Planning Association, at the request of Governor Kathleen Blanco and the Louisiana Recovery Authority. The conference was also supported by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the American Society of Civil Engineers, America Speaks, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Annie E. Casey Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York. One result of the conference was a dedicated group of Architects and Planners realized that New Orleans needed an organization to look after the long term sustainable rebuilding of this great city. City-Works was started to promote national best practices in design and urban planning as New Orleans rebuilds.
